once, when I was passing life by
out of pity, out of love
like a fountain that gives everything
i gave my heart
and I spoke to the others who were passing by
without malice, maybe with fervor:
"I obey a law which governs all of us:
I've given my heart.."
and as soon as I had spoken, like an echo,
the voice came back to me:
"look at the bad woman, that one passing by:
she's given her heart."
from mouth to mouth, over the rooftops
this cry went rolling:
"throw stones at her, yes, right in her face!
she's given her heart."
now it's red with blood, yes, my own face,
but not from shame
for I turn face to face to the men and I repeat:
"I've given my heart!"
