Guten Morgen liebe Forumsleser,
Study proposal
I would like to study at the University of Cape Town (UCT) for two terms, because I want to expand and complement/improve my knowledge in biological sciences. Also I would appreciate to learn in a different language than German and getting involved in the South-African culture.
I want to take at least one third of the courses which I would take at the University of Konstanz. As the UCT is in a partnership with the University of Konstanz, there will be no problems with getting the courses acknowledged. As the term in South Africa starts earlier than in Germany and collides with exam dates I will need to take them in 2014 and bring instead some laboratory forward. As I am planning to stay one year in Cape Town, I will be in the regular rhythm of terms, when I turn back.
Since biology is about the sciences of life, it is a very wide spread field and linked to the many different environments of the world. For successful studies and a more comprehensive understanding in that subject it is in my opinion necessary to observe at least one other system of how living organisms are organized. For example the Fynbos region is set in the southwestern of the country, where a huge amount of endemic plants are located. Also an important part of the history of humans is set in South Africa, since fossils of the Australopithecus were found in the country. After all the flora and fauna are of course quite different and exist in a huge but threatened diversity on the other side of the globe, but I am also interested in a more specific way.
The UCT is among the best universities in Africa and offers quite an inspiring scientific program. Actually three out of five Nobel Prize winners who graduated at the UCT are classical scientists and the department of sciences includes programs about Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Human Biology and Medicine. I am also interested in Human Biology and Pathology and want to absolve some courses focusing on those themes. Very important to me is their research on the HIV, since results are needed mostly in Africa. Since 2009 there have been developed two vaccines, which are now tested.
In addition to that I am sure, the South-African society itself is interesting and I am curious how it has developed since the end of the apartheid 1994. Also I want to expand my abilities in English, as it is especially in sciences necessary to be able to communicate with international partners and understand English papers.
I am conscious of the limited amount of students, who are privileged to spend a year at the UCT. Therefore I would appreciate it, if I could deepen my studies within that exchange program.
